Robotics sparks fly at Makgetse High School

On Saturday, 24 May 2025, KTG volunteers delivered an energetic robotics outreach for Grade 8 learners at Makgetse High School in Hammanskraal, north of Pretoria. It was the first event led entirely by a new KTG volunteer team member, yet from load-up to home-time the day ran with clock-work precision.

A Smooth Start

Two taxis departed the University of Pretoria campus at 08h30 and arrived at Makgetse exactly one hour later. After a quick briefing with the school’s liaison teacher, four classrooms were set up, each ready for an interactive robotics showcase.

Interactive demos – JCP students split into four groups, presenting to two classes at a time in 25-minute cycles.
Hands-on learning – Learners tested light-sensing cars, object-detection gates, radio transmitters, blackjack gaming bots and modular lighting systems.
Stand-out commitment – One JCP student, who had booked the outreach solo, ran two full classrooms on his own. His energy kept every learner engaged with impromptu games between demo cycles.
Leave-behind resources – A project poster was donated to the school so teachers can extend the lesson during regular classes.

Impact and Next Steps

By early afternoon more than 120 Grade 8 learners had experienced real-world STEM in action. Many expressed interest in joining their school’s science club, and teachers requested follow-up material to integrate robotics into the curriculum. KTG will maintain contact to support additional workshops and provide low-cost kit recommendations.
