Computer-literacy workshop connects Edward Phatudi learners to tomorrow

On 24 May 2025, KTG partnered with 55 University of Pretoria JCP volunteers to run a full-day computer-literacy outreach at Edward Phatudi Comprehensive School in Mamelodi. From the first mouse-click to the closing bell, the day showcased how technology, when paired with hands-on mentoring, can accelerate learning for every pupil in the room.

Smooth logistics, strong start
Two buses left UP Hatfield at 07 h30, arriving by 09 h00. School staff directed the team to four adjacent classrooms fitted with smart boards—ensuring every learner had a clear view of the lessons. Volunteers split into small crews and rotated through the rooms so that fresh voices and activities greeted each group every 30 minutes.

Interactive, student-led teaching
Sessions covered:
• Essential computer hardware and file organisation
• Safe internet practices and recognising misinformation
• Introductory Scratch programming and logic puzzles
• Real-world applications—budget spreadsheets, presentation design and résumé writing

Because the boards were fully functional, volunteers could demonstrate each step live while learners followed along on shared PCs. Engagement never dipped; learners asked if-statements about gaming hacks, quizzed mentors on coding careers and even debugged a volunteer’s demo slide in real time.

Impact that outlasts the day
Teachers reported a noticeable boost in learner confidence and requested the slide decks for follow-up lessons. Several pupils signed up for the school’s nascent computer club, pledging to teach peers who could not attend. KTG will supply printable workbooks and help source low-cost peripherals so the momentum continues.

Acknowledgements
KTG thanks Edward Phatudi staff for their hospitality, the volunteer drivers for a safe trip and each JCP student whose enthusiasm turned abstract concepts into hands-on discovery.
